FAQ’s about Winter Surfing
- What should I bring?
Your normal winter beach things! Bathing suits, towels … a wool blanket or housecoat… thin leggings and shirts can be worn as well. You may want to bring sunscreen, water, snacks and a thermos with warm water or something hot to drink. We’ve got all of the surfing stuff covered.
*suggestion: arrive with your bathing suit on already so you can slip directly into your wetsuit!
- Will there be Waves? What if they are too big or too small?
White Point is a 1km stretch of beach break, wave size changes with the tides and the weather, your instructors will pick the best conditions for your ability.
- What if it’s raining or snowing – will the lesson be cancelled?
No way! As we say, you’re going to get wet anyway! Some of the best waves come with the most unsettled weather! The only reason we will cancel is if the conditions are dangerous. We’ll keep an eye on the weather and touch base with you 24 hours in advance to cancel or reschedule if necessary.
- Do you need to be able to Swim?
While it is possible for you to try surfing without knowing how to swim, we don’t recommend it, especially in the winter months. You’ll have winter conditions on the beach and in the ocean to contend with, so we recommend that you be comfortable swimming the length of a pool before deciding to join us for winter surf lessons. Contact East Coast Surf School if you are unsure of your swimming ability.
- How many people will be in the lessons?
You’ll be surrounded by folks ready to have some fun! With a minimum of 10 people required to host the surfing lessons and a maximum of 15, you’re going to have a great time with everyone there.
- Will it be cold?
Yes of course, it’s winter! While Summer ocean water temperatures fluctuate between 14-19 degrees Celsius, in Winter, the temperature will dip to around 4 – 6 degrees Celsius. You’ll be outfitted in winter wetsuits complete with hoodie, boots and gloves – so it will be chilly, but you should be warm! But remember, this is winter surfing on the North Atlantic, and the air temperature may be colder than the water…that’s why we start on the pool deck and end in the pool!
- How long does it take to ‘learn’ to surf?
That really depends on how well you want to surf! While one lesson is all you need to learn the basics of safety and technique – it may take longer since we are surfing in the winter.
- Where do we get ‘ready’?
We’ll suit up inside on the indoor pool deck … do some dryland training … then hit the beach.
Post- surf lesson, we’ll head back to the indoor pool, then you can soak in hot tub or hit the sauna!
- There are change rooms off the pool deck with lockers.
If you need to cancel your surf lesson, we require 7 days prior notice.
We will refund you all but a $10 cancellation fee up to 7 days prior. Refunds will not be available for cancellations within 7 days prior to your lesson.
If White Point needs to cancel, due to insufficient number of students or in case of conditions not conducive to surfing safely, we shall notify you at least 24 hours prior and provide you with a full refund.
