NOVA SCOTIA LOBSTER CRAWL AMONG TOP THREE FINALISTS for NATIONAL AWARD
Since 2018 we’ve been busy creating unique experiences and events in honour of February’s Lobster Crawl here on the South Shore and it’s gaining attention.
Here at White Point you can join us to GO Lobster Fishing with our crew, surf in in the ocean to experience what it must be like to be a lobster, take in the LobsART show, do the 5km Lobster ‘Crawl’, and of course EAT lobster!
We love lobster so much we even declared 2019 the ‘Year of the Lobster’. There’s the Lobster S’more, Lobster Sliders, Lobster Corn Chowder … each month Chef Alan creates a new feature for us to enjoy, and we do!
And then, along with our fellow Lobster Crawl partners here on the South Shore, we get word that we are a finalist for a National Award from Destination Canada!
Now that’s news we can really sink our claws into, and having our own Marketing Manager, Donna Hatt, in the middle of helping make all this possible really is GREAT.

Media Release: July 29, 2019
The South Shore Tourism Cooperative is thrilled to announce that both the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl’s media campaign, and its partner Tourism Nova Scotia, have been named as one of the top three finalists in Destination Canada’s 2019 Explore Canada Awards of Excellence.
The awards recognize outstanding contributions to storytelling that inspires travellers to visit and explore Canada. Winners will be announced on August 13, 2019 in Ottawa, ON at GoMedia Canada, Destination Canada’s premier travel media event.
The Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl festival, created by the South Shore Tourism Cooperative, was held for the first time in February 2018. The event invites guests to come to the South Shore – from Barrington to Peggy’s Cove – to sink their claws into the tasty crustacean on its home turf with a savory month-long celebration of lobster, and lobster-themed experiences. Its inaugural year boasted over 60 events, and in 2019 it grew to more than 100 – with even more on the horizon for 2020.
Donna Hatt, Chair of South Shore Tourism Cooperative, says they were overjoyed and honoured to be selected as a finalist, noting the nomination acknowledges the impact of the Lobster Crawl for both the region and the province in extending the tourism season. “As home to Barrington, the Lobster Capital of Canada, and the longest lobster fishing season, we may be biased but there are only three seasons around here – Summer, Fall and Lobster! Together with our partnering businesses, organizations and municipalities we’re cracking open the tastiest season of all with Lobster Crawl as a feature festival for Canada in February here in Nova Scotia.”
Recognizing the potential of the Lobster Crawl to assist in creating awareness of Nova Scotia as a winter destination, over the past two years Tourism Nova Scotia has partnered with South Shore Tourism to host groups of media to experience the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl first-hand. Writers and influencers from target markets in Canada, the UK and United States went lobster fishing, visited lobster pounds, sampled lobster-infused beer, helped crown the “Best Lobster Roll”, explored art shows and met ‘Lucy’ the Groundhog Day shadow-seeking Lobster. The results have been impressive, and in some cases broken records for highest viewed stories Tourism Nova Scotia’s social media channels. In fact, the media familiarization trips were such a success that Tourism Nova Scotia’s Media Relations advisor Pamela Wamback was selected as finalist for the individual Industry award.
Reaffirming their determination in creating the Lobster Crawl, the South Shore Tourism Cooperative’s recently completed three-year winter tourism strategy has charted a course for to further expand the festival. Confident in their vision, plans are underway for 2020 under the newly appointed Festival Director, Menna Riley.
While the Cooperative eagerly awaits the official announcement and possible win, the South Shore Tourism Cooperative is tremendously proud and celebrating the honour of having been named as a finalist in and of itself.
