World Oceans Week to wash ashore at White Point with 10 Day Celebration
Friday May 25, 2018, White Point, Nova Scotia – For 90 years, the Atlantic Ocean has crashed at the doorstep of White Point Beach Resort twice daily. In honour of World Oceans Day on June 8th and the resorts 90th Anniversary, a 10 day celebration of the ocean will begin June 1st and end June10th. Drawing on partners from the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere, these close friends and neighbours will share and provide a range of ocean related activities.
Building on the hugely successful SURF-abration hosted in 2017 on World Oceans Day itself, this year’s 10 day ocean celebration line-up will include SURF-a-bration, once again held on June 8th, World Oceans Day. Designed intentionally to appeal to all ages, there are a few events, like the ‘Brush at the Beach’ with artist Johanna Knopf that is for those at least 19 years old. The Plankton, Periwinkle and Predators with Greg from Gael Tours is a magical experience for families to enjoy as is Whale Tales with Shelley Lonergan of Brier Island Whale and Seabird Cruises!
The Coffin Island Picnic on June 3 offers you a unique opportunity to get out on the ocean in a Lobster Fishing Boat with Capt. Brad Crouse to enjoy a shoreline hike on this Island in Liverpool Bay. Teaming up with Parks Canada, there’s also a guided hike into areas typically ‘off-limits’ at Kejimkujik Seaside on June 6.
There’s oceanside yoga, guided tours of the summer-long outdoor SEA’Spired sculpture show, and more, including June 8th’s SURF-abration which is on the internationally celebrated World Oceans Day. Darlene Norman, White Point’s Recreation Manager says SURF-abration invites guests to submerge themselves in the ocean. “We’re in Nova Scotia, known as Canada’s Ocean Playground. Many only look at the ocean, but on World Oceans Day we want guests to play ‘in’ the Atlantic to really experience her temperature, saltiness and power.”
During SURF-abration at White Point, from 3:00-5:00pm, the public is invited to suit up and try surfing with Rossignol Surf Shop and meet up with the team from Surfing Association of Nova Scotia. Norman says Candlebox Kayaking from Shelburne will offer Surf Kayaking lessons, Sou’west Surf from the French Shore will demonstrate Kiteboarding and AEON will be present with their handmade wooden surfboards.
As home to nesting Piping Plovers for the seventh year in a row, the Resort is anxiously awaiting the hatching of 4 eggs within the endangered species nest located on the beach. Guided Guardian Walks on the beach, led by the resort’s Horticulturalist Wendy Coolen, have already begun and will be offered twice during World Oceans Week. Interestingly, Bird Studies Canada has confirmed that the pair of plovers nesting here are in fact, the pair from the 2017 nest who were banded Mom ‘X2’ and Dad ‘U3’. Their sole surviving chick from 2017, ‘M0’ was also just seen nearby on Sand Hills Beach after wintering on the coast of Georgia, USA.
While everyday feels like Oceans Day at the resort, Joanne Veinotte, General Manager at White Point Beach Resort says this 10 day event gives them a chance to really highlight the many gifts of the ocean. “After 90 years of rolling out her sandy welcome mat for us, World Oceans Week gives us the opportunity to add our voices to the global efforts to celebrate, acknowledge and appreciate the ocean, and better understand our relationship with and impact on it. Our line-up is incredible; I’m thrilled that our guests will get to meet so many of partners and enjoy so many interesting experiences in and by the Atlantic.”
In keeping with the 2018 overall theme of reducing use of plastics Veinotte adds that their Dining Room & Lounge has moved from plastic straws to a paper version. Offering them on a ‘by request’ basis, this effort is the newest addition to their extensive list of initiatives to reduce their impact on the environment.
Kicking off June 1, most of the events are offered over the 10 days are complimentary for overnight guests and day guests. For a complete listing of White Point’s World Oceans Week events, visit www.whitepoint.com.
