Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on January 22nd, 2013

On Sunday January 13, 2013 one year after beginning the adventure with White Pointer’s to create a new quilt for White Point, surrounded by friends, family and enthusiastic quilters, we unveiled our new quilt.

Inspired by White Pointers, we were delighted to have fabric and quilt artist Bev Crouse on hand to unveil the work of art she created. The adventure has been rewarding, insightful and challenging by times, but the White Point Story Quilt, has been a project lovingly created, stitched and framed.

The reveal itself was a marvelous opportunity to showcase the work of so many, here is a picture montage of the event: The White Point Quilt Reveal.

Bev shared some insights, tid bits about the 12 month quilt construction journey….

Stitching together our Stories

Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on October 13th, 2012

by Janice Landry

Residing in 1928 Main Lodge and lost in the fire, this quilt was made in 1990 by the Mill Village Ladies Guild.

There is a familiar old saying which urges us to see, “the forest for the trees.” It is a reminder to occasionally step back and gain a better perspective, to look at things differently, or, take time to live in the here and now.

63 year old Bev Crouse is the veteran Nova Scotia quilter behind the “White Point Quilt – Stitching White Pointers Together” project. Every stitch in the special quilt being created for the new Main Lodge is kind of like every tree in that proverbial forest: each is special and tells its own story, but, when viewed in its entirety, together forms a life-affirming and sustainable masterpiece that will exist for generations.

“It is by far, the most exciting, the most emotional and most gratifying project ever. This is the one. It is part of me,” says Crouse, with a huge smile. Once you hear her amazing back story, you will understand why it is so impactful for her.

The original White Point Beach Resort quilt was among the many beautiful and significant pieces of art formerly displayed in the Main Lodge and which were subsequently all destroyed. Crouse says she first heard about what happened while watching television the day after the November 12, 2011 fire. She had two immediate, albeit, fleeting thoughts which crossed her mind: firstly, because she is a third generation, master quilter, with 50 years sewing experience, she says she worried about what had happened to the White Point quilt, and, secondly, she thought, if a second one was ever to be created, she could clearly picture it with the resort’s signature beach stone fireplace sewn in its centre.

Crouse admits she, like many, has had a hard time accepting what she saw on the t-v screen, in her Moose Harbour home. She didn’t want to believe it was true. Reflecting back, almost a year later, she now realizes the impetus for her reaction stems from the deeply emotional and draining personal drama she had just experienced with her beloved husband, Wayne Crouse.

The day before the fire, the couple had just returned from a Halifax hospital where Wayne had undergone extensive open-heart surgery, a valve replacement and had part of his aorta replaced after suffering from an aneurism.  Crouse says her father had the exact same surgery, except for the aneurism, but he had died on the operating table.

It was, and is, a lot to bear.

She believes she was unable to process the fire, initially, because the previous 6 days spent with Wayne in hospital, post- surgery, were both emotionally and physically exhausting. At the same time, she knew healing could and would begin if she did something to help.

That opportunity came from Donna Hatt, White Point’s Marketing and Product Development Manager, who approached Crouse about creating a new quilt for the rebuilt Main Lodge. Crouse did not hesitate one iota and agreed to come on board.

Main Lodge block for the quilt, one of 13, depicts the 1928 Lodge in her glory.

Crouse spearheads the project and has committed about 20 hours per week to it since February 2012. It’s evolved into a “part-time job;” done out of love for her community, the art of quilting and White Point itself.

The quilt’s progression and design can be viewed on the White Point Beach Resort website. It is rich in colour and texture and deep in story.  It is approximately 5 by 7 feet in diameter and each of 13 panels has been expertly handcrafted by Crouse. They depict favorite White Point scenes; every one is a special memory described, especially for the project, by loyal guests.

One dozen of the blocks are placed around the perimeter of the 13th- which is the centre and largest one. Appropriately, that place of honor is reserved for a panel showcasing the famous beach stone fireplace Crouse imagined should be sewn there when she first heard about, and reacted to, the fire.

While Crouse is the solo creator of the scenes, she is thrilled, and eager to explain, that people from all over the world, including her husband Wayne, one of her daughters and several of her in-laws, have helped stitch the main, fireplace panel. She has also taken the quilt to public events locally, in Toronto, Halifax and elsewhere to allow as many supporters as possible to place individual stitches in the quilt, “There is even someone from as far away as China! People say to me, ‘When I come to White Point, I’m going to look at the fireplace block and I think I can remember where I put my stitch!’”

When you get a chance to view the magnificent quilt, you should be aware that Crouse’s favorite panel is located on the bottom, right-hand corner and depicts the scene of a bonfire on the beach at White Point, “To me, it’s soothing because of the sky. I love the sky. I grew up in Prince Edward Island looking up at the night skies. I totally adore doing that. That’s why this one speaks to me,” Crouse says.

Another important panel for the quilter is located on the design’s top, middle. It’s a lovely scene showing people sitting on White Point beach looking at lobster boats at sunrise.  Crouse worked from pictures to get the larger of the two boats stitched just right. She used many old and current photographs for her research of most of the panels, like the historical one showcasing the original hunting lodge from 1928.

The fishing boat panel is extra special because, of the two boats in it, she says she struggled to get the second, tinier boat on the horizon to have the proper shape and perspective. She asked her husband Wayne for help. He is originally from Lunenburg and is knowledgeable about vessels. Wayne drew her a small, green fishing boat and that is the exact one you see in the lobster boat panel.

Appropriately, both literally, and figuratively, there is a part of both the husband and wife, who have been through so much together, in the White Point quilt, “It definitely relates to Wayne’s (health) issues and the healing part,” she thoughtfully says.

On Oct. 10/12 Lynn Hupman joined Bev to 'frame' and 'sandwich' the new WP Quilt, in the original frame used for the 1990 quilt.

In another twist of significance, Crouse says it will be she and well-known quilter, Lynn Hupman, of Mill Village, the creator of the original White Point quilt, who will work together to “sandwich” the new quilt before its’ final quilting and unveiling.

The term “sandwich” means the two veteran artisans will place the work in quilt bars in preparation for its quilting.  The bottom layer of the sandwich is called the backing. The next layer is the batting and the top layer is the actual quilt. The two women will also have help from numerous sewers, quilters and artisans who are passionate about the project during a series of quilting bees being offered by White Point.

Crouse says the whole creative process has been very humbling. She literally tears up explaining what it means to her. She also physically gets goose bumps from, and is especially touched by, people’s varied reactions to the quilt’s individual panels as they choose a personal favorite.

After a year of both community and personal lows and highs, Crouse is both deeply moved and inspired by so many caring people who have lent a helping hand in creating the artistic legacy she has helped spearhead. When it is hung in the new Main Lodge in January 2013, the White Point Beach Resort quilt will become a constant reminder that, in the face of difficulty and challenges, people can and will come together to  create something that is beautiful, lasting and impactful.

The White Point Quilt – Stitching the pieces together, an update

Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on September 30th, 2012

September 12, 2012….the White Point Quilt has been inspired, designed and stitched together with White Pointers under the watchful and artistic eye of local quilter, Bev Crouse of the Quilters Net. With 12 of the 13 individual panels complete, we thought it was a great time to share with White Pointers an update featuring your collective work to date. We felt it was a fitting way to observe the 10th month anniversary of our re-opening journey. Enjoy:  White Point Quilt Vignette

Background
In the days following the devastating fire on Nov. 12/11 that destroyed our historic 1928 Main Lodge, we began to realize the extensive loss of so many artifacts and works of art that adorned the Lodge. One of those items was the 30 year old White Point Quilt that hung with pride in the stairwell.

In January/February White Pointers offered their feedback/suggestions for ideas for the Quilt. In March we started hosting Quilting Parties. Parties were hosted at March Break at White Point, at Firemen’s Breakfasts in Liverpool, at Saltscapes Expo in Halifax and Toronto, at Quilting Guilds, and Arts Shows….literally thousands of stitches have been added to the panels, or blocks, of the White Point Quilt. Collectively, you have all helped to stitch us together again!

And we’re not done!
A series of Quilting Parties will be hosted here, at White Point following our re-opening in November and throughout the Christmas Holidays as guests add their stitches here at home. The final unveiling and hanging of the quilt here at home, at White Point, will in be January 2013.

We also invite you to join us in congratulating Bev who received the Diamond Jubilee Award from Nova Scotia Premier Dexter for her work with this project.

There are many more stitches to collect, but so many have already meant so much to our journey towards re-opening in November 2012.

Stitching it up at Saltscapes TO!

Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on June 28th, 2012

Heading into Saltscapes TO on the Queens Quay W was anticipated to be an adventure, where we hoped we would see some familiar faces, and more importantly share our story and quilt “Stitching White Pointers Together”. Within the ocean of sites and sounds of Nova Scotia – hanging proudly as part of our White Point backdrop were the 8 panels of our new White Point quilt.

With Bev Crouse at our side, the creator of our new quilt, invited guests at the show June 21-24, to take a seat and add their own stitch to the beachstone fireplace panel. To our surprise folks stepped right up – Torontonians who had been a past guest, to ex-pats from our community, to visitors from around the world and guests in general – willingly took needle in hand, adding their stitch, as they learned about the story behind our new quilt. More than 125 folks added their stitch. Many sharing their personal stories about White Point, Nova Scotia and aspirations of travelling to NS. Many shared a passion for fabric art as well – rekindling fond memories of the quilt their Grandmother had gifted to them as a treasure they cherish.

Indeed, under the shadow of the CN Tower and amidst the buzz of Toronto – we stitched memories, stories and future guests together, one at a time – strengthening the fabric of our White Point Quilt.

It was a pleasure to share our quilt, and the experience with Bev Crouse (The Quilters Net) in TO!
Here are some of the pictures we captured of folks stitching and our time at Saltscapes TO:

Quilting is surfing along on the White Point Quilt

Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on June 18th, 2012

May and June have been busy months for the Quilt and it’s not letting up!
We spent time with the Queens Quilters, we’ve been to school at the Liverpool Junior High, to the Quilt Canada Show & Share (May 31/12) and in a couple of days, we’ll be in Toronto at Queens Quay for the Red Path Festival – Saltscapes Expo.

Bev has been busy letting the creativity take over and letting the stitches flow. Take a peek at the pieces to date here, can’t wait to have the folks in TO add theirs. Once we return, we’re heading to Barrington for a Quilting Party, up to the Queens Manor to have some seasoned quilters add their stitches and July 19 – we’re off to the Tall Ships Fest in Halifax with our White Point team in the Taste of Nova Scotia Tent! Believe we may even be heading to Digby too!

Indeed many hands make light work!

Bev says she has been enjoying the adventure thus far and much like Frances Jewel Dickson the author of Destination White Point, Bev has been capturing stories and stiches of White Pointers – the quilt will tell its own story, our story.

White Point Quilt – stitching it up on the road!

Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on May 14th, 2012

We have been remiss in updating this Blog about the amazing progress our Quilt is making under  the watchful eye of Bev Crouse as many White Pointers continue to add their stitches.

This past month in addition to the golf, beach, pool and bunny blocks, Bev introduced us to the Cottages and, on April 28th, the historic 1928 Main Lodge Block. This historic block is so close to the original design, it almost looks like a painting we have on the wall back here at White point – resemblance is amazing! We are so proud of the work and integrity that Bev has brought forward to this project and so very thankful to have her working with us to realize this dream. Be sure to check out Bev’s online Quilt Shop too call The Quilters Net!

We’ve taken the Quilt on the road many times recently too.
April 28:We hosted a Quilting Party at the Liverpool Firemens Breakfast where the kids (young and old alike) made bunny patches and added their stitches to several of our panels – including the beachstone fireplace block that will be a focal point of the new quilt.

April 29:Guests at Saltscapes Expo stepped up willingly to add their stitches to our blocks as they shared their memories. Several people said adding their stitches was the main reason they came to the Expo – we were so delighted to have so many people participate. Bev again was fabulous and patient as everyone added their own touch to the blocks.

May 3: Golf Club Members attending their members meeting added their own stitches to, yes, the Golf Block!

And we’re not done! We are hitting the road to host a Quilting Party with the Queens Quilters on May 24, hoping to share our quilting story at the national Quilting Conference in Halifax May 31. From June 21 – 24, we’ll be hosting a Quilting Party in Toronto as we participate in the Saltscapes Expo on the waterfront. In between we hope to get to a few schools, add in a few more Parties in and around Nova Scotia too – whew…many stitches to be added yet!

Here are a few pictures from our past months adventures!

White Point Quilt – 4 blocks in progress

Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on April 1st, 2012

On March 30th, Bev Crouse, (of the Quilters Net) the creator of our new White Point Quilt revealed the golf and pool panels for our new quilt adding to the Bunny and Beach panels she has previously shared.

So far more than 80 people have placed their stitches in our Quilt, with many more opportunities to come!
This has been ‘sew’ much fun.

Here are all four, as a work in progress as of March 30, 2012…stunning work!
Our quilt will be beautiful, a real work of art!

White Point Staff Quilting Party – had us all in stitches!

Posted by White Point Beach Resort Team on April 1st, 2012

On Friday March 30, 2012, Bev Crouse of the Quilters Net and our guiding champion for our new White Point Quilt took a team of us from White Point on a journey to place our own stitches in our new quilt in development. While the purpose was to stitch fabric, it also stitched those of us present, together again. As may be expected, many of our team contiue to find not being at White Point daily a very difficult transition. We get together at least monthly, as a family would, but after spending so many years together nearly every day – it is very different.

Over the course of just 90 minutes, gathering to make our own Bunny Patch, while adding our own stitches to the new golf panel – we difinitely shared many laughs, memories, and chatted up a storm. Below are some pictures of our Quilting Party – see anyone you recognize?

Pleas join us for one of our next Quilting Parties:
April 28: Firemens Breakfast 9 – 10:30am, Liverpool
April 29: Saltscapes Expo, Halifax
