Thank you one and all for your ideas and suggestions for consideration of our new Main Lodge. On Feb. 14th, we were delighted ot reveal the conceptual design and invite you to take a look at it now, at : http://www.whitepoint.com/blog/2012/02/14/rebuilding-white-point-%E2%80%93-main-lodge-design-released/
Ideas submitted under Share Your Ideas, have been shared here under this Beach Blog Section called “Ideas for NEW White Point Main Lodge – from you!”
Below are the submissions we have received up to 5pm Feb. 20 2012:

My first suggestion is one I mentioned before. I think that opening night for the new lodge should be by invitation for the famiies that were there the night of the fire. I feel this would be a great idea as the saying goes.”start where you left off”. As for plans for the new building. An elevator is a must and is probably regulation in this day. And I do agree with change rooms being closer to the pool. I felt uncomfortable walking through the hallway in my bathing suit so usually changed in my own room before heading to the pool and would walk back with wet clothes. The shuffle board seems to be a big hit for as lot of families. I know we spent hours as a family playing that game. Easy enough for kids and fun enough for adults and even our grandparents played
. Great family time which is what whitepoint is known for. Your salt water pool use to be very refreshing but I noticed the last year or so way to much chlorine. Like mentioned above people were getting rashes. These are just suggestions however if they are not used, I am sure the great staff there will continue to make the feel wonderfull as always! Happy new year and looking forward to returning once you have reopened.
With a young family and past visitor to White Point a water slide (indoor) would be a great addition to the indoor water area. Kids love it.. May be event two slides. Just a suggestion…have a great holiday and best wishes on the reconstruction.
3. Steen Sallows says:
Here’s my suggestions:
Guest rooms
- the rooms on the river front were really to small for families so you could make them larger
- larger bathrooms
- brighter hallways upstairs
- keycards!
Dinning room
- a pennsula (like oak islands)
- more ocen view tables
- more central buffet
POOL!
-a newer more modren pool
-larger hot tub
-change room shall be closer (i got cold walking to them)
Welcome area
- More appealing when you first drive in
And thats all fore now! Sea you later!
4. John says:
I’d like to see a take-out window for beach lunches or dinner in the room
5. Dan and Louise Sinclair says:
As a frequent swimmer at White Point, I thought it might be the ideal time to incorporate some energy-saving and ‘green’ features to the lodge. Specifically, has WP considered installing solar water-heating panels on the new roof? This could not only reduce the energy required to heat the pool water, but perhaps supplement the heating system for the lodge itself. Also, there may still be financial incentives (rebates) for such an installation.
On a personal note, Louise and I would like to thank you and all the White Point staff for making our lives a little better each time we visited. The Christmas social for the Country Club members last week was a great success in our eyes and just made us look forward to what is going to be by this time next year!
All our best to you in the New Year,
Dan and Louise Sinclair
6. The Schreiber family from Switerland says:
Hello to you all, Thanks a lot for making us a part of the White Point family!
What we would love to have is a part in the new main lodge with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the sea, a cosy fire place and lots of comfortable chairs and sofas to hang around (something like that on the photo but much cosier…).
We wish you all the best for a Happy New Year and we are looking forward very much to be back at White Point.
The Schreiber family from Switerland ( a photo similar to what you see here at this link was also submitted:

7. Eileen Coady says:
With best wishes for the design and reconstruction phase! Just a few thoughts:
Make sure to keep the old fireplace as a key part of the lodge ambiance.
Lots of dining room windows to view the ocean and shoreline are super important….I know of another oceanside restaurant that has a central raised floor section so that every table has a view of the water while dining.
Attempt to incorporate green energy ideas in the lodge facilities so as to bring WP forward into the 21st century while holding to the feel of the last 70 plus years.
8. David Gordon says:
Being from coastal NS , I am always mesmerized by the ocean and tides. I think a great idea would be to build a dining area with a glass floor over the oceans edge.
9. Katelyn says:
I think a bigger gym space and some more fireplaces for marshmellow roasts would be awesome!!
10. Ron says:
I would like to see a more “English” style bar rather than the rustic one you had before which was satisfactory but not at all memorable.
11. Denise Branchaud says:
Don’t want to modernize or take away from the original
charm of the lodge too much but how about an elevator tucked away discreetly somewhere for folks that have trouble climbing stairs? Had an injured SI joint this year and struggled to climb to the guestrooms each visit..but IT WAS WORTH IT!!
We love White Point and can’t wait for the re-build. Best wishes to everybunny!!
12. Azelin Selig says:
I would love to see white point rebuild with a beautiful destination spa. It seems to be the route most resorts are taking. I know you had a spa before but, it is a huge growing industry right now. The most popular is the Aveda spas. It would make White Point even more desirable.
13. sandra ramsay says:
I found a photo and has posted it on the facebook website a while back…i love the huge picture windows that would bring in an unobstuctured view of the ocean. This is in my opinion, rustic but elegant. Since i cant find a way to repost it here, its on NOv 17th of whitepoints facebook site. Also the new lodge needs to be more accessible for people with mobility issues. As much as i love whitepoint, the stairs were a challenge and the pool was one of my favourite spots. Please bring back the shuffleboard table and a bigger games area too.
14. Wendy says:
Happy New Year!
The Batten – Cameron Clan has had many discussions on this topic of your rebuild, we are always there in October for our vacation club ownership week (Waters Edge) and again in March (Ocean Club),we would like to see a fitness centre with windows, we like to eat all the great food in the dinning room but need to “work it off” after. We are hoping you maintain a pool area similar to the last with beautiful windows overlooking the ocean, as a Mom with wee ones, I would spend hours sitting watching and listening to the waves while the kids played – heaven. As someone else mentioned, having more seating areas and cozy nooks overlooking the ocean would be ideal and of course, having a dining room with loads of windows to take advantage of the view, and lastly my teens really really want you to ensure there is still a games room, for some corny reason we as a family loved going in that old games room to play together and have enjoyed it for years, if you could get your hands on another old shuffle board game – that would be very cool, the kids would also like a sitting area or couches to hang and play cards etc
Here’s to a fab 2012 – thank you for the construction cam too!
See you in March!
15. Elaine Elliot says:
Mr. Morton….as you can see by my surname, as an Elliot I have had close connections with the lodge. Howard Elliot was my husband’s uncle. We fondly remember the photo of Howard in the Founders Lounge and can probably replace one for you. I might add that we had calls from Toronto and BC regarding the fire and will pass along news of the construction web-site to family near and far. Good luck.
16. Peter Ripple says:
When our family was young, we used to get pool memberships at WP during holidays and March break. I observed that the pool was a focal point for families visiting WP. I have also had pool memberships for a couple of winters since retiring so that Debbie and I might go for early morning swims to do lengths. The free form pool was not ideal for that, but the best we had in Queens county. I would like to see WP make a pool that would be better suited to the use of guest families on weekends and holidays and local people through the week. I would recommend a pool rectangular in shape that could be used for lanes. Since the shallow end of the old pool received the most use, I recommend a pool 3′-6″ or 4′ deep. This would be safer and less worrisome for parents with small children, and would be well suited to most recreational use, as well as water polo and water aerobics classes. Possibly the Milton Dam Busters would become interested in a year around swimming program. I think that for many who were disappointed to see the pool component of Queen’s Place slashed, a good facility at White Point would be welcome. With demographics changing and more seniors moving into Queens county, I believe a pool will have more interest than ice for fitness and relaxation.
Also, I stopped swimming at WP because of a reaction to the chlorine in the water. I know of another frequent attender who stopped because of chlorine rash as well. I would hope the new pool would employ a reverse osmosis filtration method of keeping the water clean and chemical free. They are being used now in many public and private pools.
The lodge burning was a trajedy. My sympathies to all who have lost employment and been inconvenieced by this loss. Here also is an opportunity to improve on the shortcomings of the homey and charming old lodge and rebuild one that is even better. Best wishes for this undertaking in the new year.
17. Linda MacDonald says:
Main lodge should be 4-5 levels. First level is the dining
room, with large windows, outdoor terrace, great lighting & a coffee station. Front reception area & gift shop same size; stone fireplace for story book time etc., and a lounge/bar area with terrace. Also have a smaller reception room or dining room as before for the overflow. Above have 2nd to 4th stories for bedrooms with great views; need an elevator, glass rail balconies for the view – think of cruise ship layouts. Pool same basement level area with large windows, large hot tub, spa, infrared sauna, great change rooms, showers, bathroom. Need foot showers etc., entering building/pool area. Craft room, games room, movie room.
Above the pool would be the grand hall for receptions with large windows & terrace. Building needs media computer wireless access. Also need new playground equipment and a boardwalk or granite walk down to the beach again for easy access. Redo toddler salt water pool area maybe with splash area. Build a bigger parking lot. Wow, I included a lot. Thanks for the opportunity to add my two cents.
Best of luck with the design.
Cheers, Linda MacDonald
18. Paula hodson says:
I Heard there’re going to be known rooms in the Main Lodge At, Whitepoint. I feel this is a huge mistake. You have many guest to come who are older and who come expressly because they can stay within the one building the whole time they are there. I also feel that while you are rebuilding you need to make room for a full-service spa. The spa should include hair esthetic services as well as massages Having a less formal dining area for families would be a good idea which is separate from a formal dining area for those who wish to have a quiet romantic dinner. Maintaining a dining area with a view is extremely important.!
Thank you for the opportunity to share my opinion
19. Tim Keating says:
think a timber framed main lodge would look wonderful and rustic to blend in with exsisting areas
20. Kevin Pope says:
Please try and retain the old-time feel. We loved the old fireplace and would like it to rebuilt to be a new focal point in the new main lodge. Also, the old dining room was one of the nicest features with the open concept and many windows. These, along with allowing more units with Ocean view would be great. Of course there can be many pluses to a modernization – wiring, wifi, elevators, sprinklers. We are looking forward to our return stay in late November or early December as we have done now for a few years. We had our stay booked for December 3rd and like everyone else were saddened by the fire, but look forward to the new chapter, when once again it will be a Great Day at White Point!
21. Ian MacNeil says:
My wife and I always ate on the deck whenever possible… breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, it could get a bit chilly as soon as the sun disappeared behind the roofline in the late afternoon. Perhaps some thought could be given to a wrap-around deck that also captured the late afternoon/early evening sun, or perhaps extending it even further seaward. Whatever, please think about the deck and make it bigger.
Keep the intimate feeling… no soaring ceilings with 3 story windows and huge log beams that would fit in better in Aspen or B.C. The honest, cozy Nova Scotia oceanfront feeling is a must, especially on those foggy and rainy days.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment. I’ve been coming to White Point from Ontario for over 48 years starting as a child, and look forward to my next visit.
22. Donna from Bedford says:
I’d like to see an octagon shaped building close to the water with many windows, posts and beams, stone work, and passive solar enegry incorportated into the design inorder to get the maximum benefit from the scenery. There could be a longer building housing the rooms and services behind this octagon. The rooms should have an ocean view. Perhaps services could be kept to the not so scenic side of the building. Perhaps a small surround sound movie theatre area for those rainy nights.
23. Alicia Corey says:
We are having our fall 2013 wedding at White Point. It would be wonderful to see some more current, modern neutral decor that would fit into the beautiful rustic nautical ambiance that White Point already offers! For weddings – neutral chair colours for the reception area (i.e. white, beige, brown), white/beige napkins, beige/white tablecloths, new dance floor in a honey oak colour, offering of white/beige chair covers if new chairs cannot be purchased. Neutral colours make it much easier for couples to plan their wedding colours around. I noticed in most pictures on your
website that most people had to rent neutral coloured table linens, napkins and chair covers to incorporate their brighter/bolder wedding colours. It would be nice if this was already offered as most venues today do. Also can the fireplaces in the new lodge be built to be a replica of the old ones? They were so beautiful!!

24. Valerie Blaauw says:
Please keep rooms on the second floor that overlook the ocean. I have used room 213 for twenty years and love the view and the convenience of being in the Main Lodge. Five of us have taken 211,212,213,214,215 for so many years and have loved the ability to get together but also have our much needed time alone in our rooms.
Something that would not happen in a cottage. Could you please also keep the rustic twenties charm of the the old building. So happy the rebuilding is taking place so quickly.
25. Dominique Gagne says:
Make the new lodge exactly like the original. No changes needed.
26. Marlene Crammond
We would love to see a large pool for lane swimming, modern change rooms, a sauna/steam room and a small gym area. We hope you will have a pool table and a bright, fun activity centre for kids…. no arcade games needed.
All the best in your rebuild…. our son loves the Summer Surf School.
27. Natalie McMaster says:
One issue my family and other families had with the main lodge was the lack of family change rooms for the pool. It made it very difficult when I was at the pool with my 7 year old son or my husband was there with our 4 year old daughter. I know there are many families that would love to see a family change room. Does not have to be fancy just a space to change and use the washroom. Thanks Nat
28. Vern Aker says:
A plaque unveiled at the new opening with all the staff members names on it plus the firefighters etc who worked to save the building.
29. Carol Patterson says:
I have been coming every summer to White Point since I was age 3 in 1957, and am now a cottage owner on White Point Estates. I would like to see the old circular tower (my sister and I called it the “Nancy Drew Tower” when we were little girls) restored as a feature of the main lodge. It was part of the original lodge until about 1980 when that part of the lodge was removed to make way for the indoor swimming pool and rooms above. And certainly please recreate the beautiful beachstone fireplaces that were in the Founders’ Lounge and the lobby lounge. Windows in the dining room — bigger, with a better view from the dining room of the spectacular beach.
30. Jill Rafuse says:
1. Some waterside restaurants in the Caribbean have panorama dining rooms with two tiers so everyone has a window seat. Design is like a side-split house. Staff either go up 5-6 steps to tier one or down 5-6 steps to tier two.
2. Wherever you have the rooms for weddings and other events,
consider a separate entrance with coat room and generous bathrooms. Brides need lots of stall room to negotiate around their dresses!
3. Green roof with herb gardens?
4. Solar panels to augment heating?
5. Wraparound deck
6. Reading room/ den-like area that’s a quiet room
7. Dining room wired for surround-sound, conference rooms/ballrooms
too
8. Flexible conference/ ballroom spaces to accommodate groups of all sizes
9. Take-out or canteen area near pool and beach
10. Dining incentives for golf green fee players, not necessarily
guests at the Lodge
Love the Lodge, love the golf course, love the beach, love that you are rebuilding.
Best of luck with reconstruction.
31. Kate Goodwin says:
I would love to see some sort of double fireplace that was indoor outdoor with seating area..in the summer the little ones could have their bedtime story outside by the outdoor side and in bad weather/cold they could be inside. Also another way to enjoy the fireplace with a different atmosphere than the bonfires.
32. Bob Higham says:
We live in Beach Meadows, and would often come to the resort for a meal. We liked sitting by the fireplace having a beer and chat with Sid and the staff. We liked coming for lunch on a stormy day and getting a seat by a window watching the surf crashing on the beach. We also liked lunching on the deck on a fine day, what a view. And then dinner in the evening with a window seat in the dining room. So important for us in the new building. Fireplaces with cosy seating. Another deck with tables. And lots of window seats in the restaurant and bar.
33.Linda McNab. BC says:
It would be great to have an indoor outdoor leisure pool. As a child I spent many an hour in the outdoor pool. Kids love outdoor pools but you could build one where you could swim between the great outdoors and indoors. The hot tub should be outdoors as well. Then the chlorine smell would not permeate the building.
34. Shirley Munk says:
Love White Point Resort and have visited during March Break for many years..we’ll miss it this year!
With our aging population I think an elevator is a must and perhaps some ideas for better lighting in the dining room. A lodge style should be maintained so that “all-in-one” accommodations are available.
35. William Davey says::
The new Main Lodge dining room should be on the water side for a better view than the parking lot.
36. Edie Hippern says:
Hoping that you will be building a larger indoor pool with a bigger and better hot tub. Keep the fireplace area in the main part of the lodge as it gave the main lodge so much character. Lots of exposed beams and wood panelling. Oh and an improved exercise and games are should be a must. Can’t wait to visit again.
37. Robert Smith says:
Just some things to possibly consider and to include in
the fabric of the new building.
1. How about a reception area with a big wave roof with a viewing area above (all year).
2. The area has rocks abound – use this theme for a portion of the building i.e. gable walls. Using local materials will also be sustainable and rock will also add to the thermal mass of the building.
3. Ensure the building is as thermally efficient as you can afford -the more insulation installed the less *toys* you may need for Mechanical and Electrical installation and future maintenance/replacemeent. Insulation is always cheaper than M&E, a higher rated insulation will give optimum performance than a comprimise on a cheaper brand, heating will not get cheaper in time.
4. One *toy* to invest in is possibly a commercial Combined Heat & Power (CHP), Freewatt are one manufacturer I am aware of running on natural gas and possibly Propane by now as well as Baxi-Senertec Dachs technology use oil (diesel and rapeseed oil). Gives out free electricity as well as hot water and heating for likes of baseboards or (wet) underfloor heating and possibly swimming pool, can also be piped to other buildings if it is big enough system – buy what you can afford. Also helps as dont have to remidy things with NS power outages when they occur for heating…….
5. Timber framed building with hempcrete to create a sustainable building with good thermal mass (stores heat and releases it when cooler) see link http://www.americanlimetechnology.com/product-info/hemcrete/
6. Rainwater and possibly greywater harvesting (bathroom waste recycling except WC’s)
7. Grass roof (sedum) sustainable and friendly to the environment creates a bio-diversity for good bugs! Also good for keeping roof warm in winter cool in summer! Install bat and bird boxes
8. Use renewable technolgy sparingly as it costs alot to install and has a lifespan before maintainence is required. ie its not windy or sunny everyday, wind energy is not consistent! Solar panels in a marine environment may not last expected 25 years.
9. Orientate the building to use as much of the sun as possible – its free energy
10. Passive fire technology – fire retardant paints available for both inside and outside of the building www.envirograf.com and a Canadian company for the structural fire protection www.bluwoodcanada.com

38. Holly Bond says:
My idea is to build the White Point exactly as it was before as I thought it was perfect. BUT, I know you are all looking
for some new ideas…so, here are a few that I think would be neat, but not change the WP that we all adore:
- a few skylights (the sky is so amazing that we should take advantage of it, especially in a guest room)
- name the rooms (instead of numbering them, it would be fun to name them after the great people who made the WP what it is today)
- a telescope in one area for people to view the sky
- a waterslide in the pool area
- a games room without so many video games, but old-fashioned games that bring families together, not further apart.
- I would love to help design the gym – it is my background and you could spend very little money and have a very up-to-date, cooler gym (because as you know, most people don’t use it!)
Love White Point Resort and have visited during March Break for many years..we’ll miss it this year!
With our aging population I think an elevator is a must and perhaps some ideas for better lighting in the dining room. A lodge style should be maintained so that “all-in-one” accommodations are available.
40. Hollie Quick says:
Floor-to-ceiling windows that really showcase White Point’s second-greatest asset – the beach! The first is it’s people
of course.

41. Sandra Low says:
If the budget allows, built it based on green technology such as a seawater pool heated by solar,(solves the chlorine issue) indoors heated by solar,(probably has a 5 year return)gray water treatment etc. Look at the new Pier 21 building for example. Check for rebates forsolar, plus the government “might” help out with a forgiveable loan if
the building is completely solar. They could use the advertising of the new build for tourism etc.,I’m suggesting this with hopes of keeping the great atmosphere always enjoyed at WP.
Please incorporate large stone fireplaces and cozy couches and chairs to sit in by the fire. The view of the ocean is sooooooo awesome I would suggest the dining room, bar, and relaxation areas to be next to the seaside. Lots of wood, just like the old lodge, so it fits in well with the remaining buildings. I could go on and on. If you could just build it the way it was that would be perfect. I don’t know how you could improve on the old structure. it was so perfect. People love to sit by the window and watch the sea though. The more windows the better.
We always loved the games room(playing pool, vending machine etc.) and fitness room and would really miss it. Love having the computers as well the at home feeling of the lodge not too over done. It always feel like ever one is welcome.
44. Jill Chambers says:
A cozy coffee bar, please. Starbucks (or much better-see links 1 and 2 below!) quality and plenty of comfortable seating. Also, the outdoor garden seating at the Uncommon Grounds is lovely.
Suggested Links: www.jpscoffee.com/ , http://uncommongroundscafe.com
45. Kelly and Stephen Koch says:
Please keep the cozy fireplaces in the main lodge, tons of windows for the gorgeous view and if possible some chronicle photos of the past White Point to the new. Great breezy relaxing pool area and perhaps some more tables, chairs and lounge chairs for the outdoor pool and beach areas. Your dining room and foyer were perfect!!! Wouldn’t change a thing!!!! Keeping up with your eco-friendliness and more would be great!
Can’t wait to vacation again at our home away from home again :~)

46. Brad Dykema says:
I’ll tell you what my biggest fear is with the redevelopment: that the lodge will feel like a Super 8 motel with a fireplace. Hopefully budget and design skill allow for an inspiring rebuild, not a simply functional one. I think key to the new building will be that it feels rustic, grand, and warm, with all modernity buried. As some have already suggested, timber-frame construction with authentic rustic features (like stone fireplaces) would go a long way to improving on the charming character of the old building. Aside from that, what an opportunity to include a bigger, better pool area (the old one was showing its age in a big way), improved dining space (capitalizing on the view), and better lounge/bar. As sad as our family is to have lost White Point for a year, this is such a wonderful opportunity to make it better than ever!
47. Anne White says:
Thanks for giving those of us who love White Point a chance to tell you what’s important to us for the new lodge.
We hope that the old rustic charm can be captured in the new building – we would hate for it to look like a typical, modern hotel with no personality – please try to make it as much the same as possible, while incorporating modern building materials and conveniences.
An elevator would be very nice.
Maybe an outdoor hot tub.
We always loved being in Founder’s Lounge or out on the deck when people came strolling through who were there for the first time – we loved to see the looks on their faces as they came through from the front lobby and got their first view of the ocean.
While a couple people have said that the front of the old lodge wasn’t welcoming, we feel that the complete opposite is true – there was never a more welcoming sight to us than driving up the long driveway, smelling the woodsmoke in the air, and getting our first glimpse of the lodge – we always felt like we were coming home.
A bigger dance floor would be nice in the lounge, for when Alex’s music makes you want to get up and dance.
The old lodge was a true Nova Scotian icon, unique and beautiful with a personality of its own - you could almost feel it wrapping its arms around you, making sure you were comfy and cozy.
I’m confident that the new lodge will be just as wonderful, in large part because of the people who will inhabit it, specially your wonderful staff.
48. Earle Illsley says:
I suspect you already are looking into enviromrntal friendly techonology for the new building. I love the old charm and think that it could be incorporate newer green tech. With the wind possibly wind generation and solor panells, recycling the water waterless urinals similar to what Acadia University has installed. I do not know if possible but is there techonology where exercise bikes and other items can feed back energy to the grid. This may be a unique item. I have herrd of matts thhat generate energy by people walking on them. There are so many ways to restore the old charm of the place but be a beacon for new ideas. Loved our visits here and look forward to comming back .
49. Hollie Quick says:
It’s a small thing but an important one since White Point’s history has always been so much a part of the ambience: if
there is a long hallway somewhere, it should be used to “tell the story” of White Point since 1928 using plaques of old photos right up to 2011 with the news article of the wedding couple on the day of the fire.
And a few more ideas –
1. Maybe move the spa area inside the Main Lodge.
2.Since the culinary weekends have always been such a huge hit, have an area in one corner of the dining room especially set aside for this. Perhaps some kind of a nook that people could sit at and watch Chef do his demo in the middle. This space could easily be used for wine tastings and even craft making demos as well.
3. Have a cozy media room where regularly scheduled kid’s movies could be shown. Small groups could even sign out the room to watch movies or sporting events complete with “room service.” Kids (and parents) would love this!
50. Rhonda Jacquard says:
I really hope to see the lodge to remain the “RUSTIC” theme, this what is so unique, beautiful, peaceful and draws people to it! Thanks…:)
51. Ann L. Taylor says:
Plenty of access for handicapped. Parking, entrance access, room upgrades, smooth walkways. One level, elevator. Thanks!

I’ve been going to White Point with my parents for years now, I’m 24 now and I hope to keep going back for years to come. My father and I were discussing the rebuild last night. We hope that you retain the “rustic” feeling that white point always welcomed everyone with. It shouldn’t be rebuilt and have a feeling of a big cold hotel. Use lots of wood, lots of stone, rebuild the fireplaces, make it feel cozy! It should be accomodating to everyone, larger rooms for
families, an elevator for those of us who require one if they’re not able to use stairs. The spa/pool/hot tub should be larger, and the views from the lodge just as astounding. The building should incorporate lots of green technology, there’s plenty of it available in Nova Scotia, not only make staying at white point luxurious, but make it an eco-friendly get-away as well, there’s lot’s of ways to incorporate new, modern technology into a new building, but make it
feel like the old lodge at the same time. My main hope is that the atmosphere of the building is the same.
I actually have no new ideas as I feel the lodge was spectacular as it was. My wife and stayed at white point on four
separate occasions in the past and enjoyed it each and every time. The staff is second to none. We felt although we lost a friend when we heard about the fire. We were also very upset when the boats stopped running from Maine to Yarmouth as that made it much easier for because I am wheel chair bound due to a leg amputation. Are there any plans to start running the ships again? We are from Massachusetts (USA). In any case we shall return. Good luck to all and please stay safe. Thank you, Scott and Hope Masse
I think it would be nice to have a rooftop patio with a hot tub, lounge chairs, etc. as there is an awesome view! Also, some outdoor showers to wash off the sand and salt for guests.
re change rooms and pool deck; Consider using a non-slip tile designed for such areas. 2)provide a couple of change cubicles so that children do not have to watch us naked old ladies ( which happened on more than one occasion)
3) Keep up the great work, you are going about everything creatively!
To add to my first comment..my entire family really loved playing pool, ping pong, shuffleboard (indoors)…oh how we’ll miss that beautiful shuffleboard…and we hope these will be incorporated in a new games room..we very much enjoyed staying in the lodge where you have easy access to all the amenities and contact with your wonderful staff..do what you do best and I’m sure the new lodge will provide all a person could hope for..thanks for caring enough to ask.
One of my favourite parts of going to White Point Lodge was the glassed in pool area with the big windows over looking the beach. During a March Break get away this vista combined with the plants and the warm sun coming through the windows was almost as good as being down south. I have even run outside across the beach into the water and then back into the warm hot tub. I hope you take the big glassed in pool area with the view into consideration for your future rebuild
The same gorgeous beach stone fireplace! Maybe make the Flounder’s Lounge bigger with more seating….big comfy chairs, soft inviting sofas, and lots of pillows. Everyone loves that lounge so much with it’s spectacular view, warm, and coziness, it would be great if there was more of it! I don’t think I would change much more to be honest. Maybe the lounge area beside the lounge could be a little bigger so more could share the fireplace. I hope you still have lots and lots of huge windows!
please keep the guest rooms in the main lodge.we have family members that are alergic to animals and this is the only
accomodation that they can use.
61. Dan Conlin says:
I hope you can revive the original architecture of the lodge, with the log turrets, log construction and big stone chimeny. It evokes a sort of “homespun Banff by the sea” look. This architecture also compliments the surviving old cabins and connects the lodge to its much admired history.
62. Nina Waite says:
We’ve been coming to Whitepoint for 15 years and we mourned the loss of the lodge with you all. I’ve read people’s
comments and there are tons of great ideas – good luck choosing from among them! Here are my two cents’ worth:
1) It would be great to enlarge the dining room and improve view planes. Also have more windows that open to get those ocean breezes, or air conditioning if it’s really hot.
1a) I am not sure that mini pool that’s outdoors serves much function as it is, and perhaps that could be scrapped and something else included in the new, bigger pool indoors.
2) The hot tub is hugely popular given the year round frigid nature of the ocean temps, so it should be bigger, but still within reach of the beach. For 15 years our gang has gone the traditional “White point Hot Tub Sprint” from the hot tub to the ocean and back! Ideally the hot tub should be on the ocean side of the pool and have the option of being open air (being able to open windows so that the hot tub/pool and semi-open air in great weather)
3) I agree the fireplace is a pivotal meeting place and should be built as such.
4) The entrance could have a higher ceiling and be a little grander than previously.
5) Beach take out would be lovely. The previous lower level was empty most of the time. This could be redesigned.
6) I agree with other bloggers who wanted a wrap around deck that could take advantage of maximum sunlight. Eating out and watching the waves has to be a highlight. We need a great deck with lots of seating.
7) Good luck with it all. We are excited to see your design when it comes about.
63. Margaret says:
I would like the main lodge to have a sitting area with an ocean view and windows that open so people can smell the fresh ocean air – but no fireplace in this area. Then for those who like it, there would be a separate sitting area with a fireplace.
63. Tracey Leary says:
Our family has travelled at least once and sometimes twice a year to whitepoint for the last 10 years, and now we are watching it’s rebirth supported by so many wonderful people and ideas. I am deeply grateful to all of you for this.
My only suggestion comes from my children, now teenagers, who have said “we hope they don,t change the games room too much, we liked it like it was.” They liked the fact that it was ‘low tech’ and quiet [no bells and whistles]with games that for them are now unique to whitepoint, like shuffleboard and ping pong and old arcade games. |
Thank you for so many wonderful years, and we are looking forward to being with you late this year or early in 2013!

64. Bill & Marje Hockey says:
After 20+ years of enjoying room #214 every October we are hoping that despite the loss of our beloved lodge that the rebuild will give a big nod to the past with hope for a promising future. We would like to see lots of ocean view rooms with patios and elevator access. More levels are possible, but we would like to see the building keep a historical appearance, i.e. not multi-storied. A larger pool would be nice. The thoughts that one could place the non public facilities (kitchen, public washrooms, etc.) on the non-ocean side is a good one if you are to take maximum advantage of the ocean view. More sheltered areas to sit in outside would also be nice. We also want to be able to sit beside the wood fireplaces again. We look forward to returning as we kept our booking for October 2012, and to the staff who are so welcoming and efficient.
65. Kathryn Mosley says:
Hi guys , i went to whitepoint last summer and me and my brother loved the bunnies so keep the bags of bunny food! you should have a pool and hottub and maybe a basketball court! you could also have a have a snack stand were you can get popsicles and ice cream.
thanks
66. Alex Vaughan says:
Might it still be good to have a couple of smaller/cheaper rooms (like 201 and 208) in the new lodge for the entertainer (me!)and/or staff? Also, what about a removable wall in the new lounge so it would be more intimate with a small crowd and give the lodge another room for small functions/meetings.
67. Rosemarie Cochrane says:
I think that the bar should be redesigned in two parts so that families can stay and watch live music in the evenings if the parents deem it suitable. One side could be designated as a restaurant. The musician(s) should be easily seen from both sides. In the past, we were always disappointed to be asked to leave in the evening because we had our child with us. We tend to sleep in late on vacation and eat late so we seemed to be often in the position of
rushing our meal and leaving the music so that the bar would not fall afoul of the liquor license laws.
Good luck with your rebuild.
68. Mary Thompson says:
We have had two great family reunions at White point and hope to do it again in the future. It would be nice to have a larger fitness area, one with an ocean view and the pool area should include a larger hot tube. Looking forward to returning.
69. Sarah says:
Make a waterslide for the indoor pool and make a deep end for diving. Also you should try a different pancake recipe I hope to see the lodge re-built beautifully.
70. Quinn says:
Create the same style with the main lodge but make a bigger pool with a deeper deep end and have a slide that will
attract more families. And make another arcade room.
71. Judy Conrad says:
We live in Shelburne and love to swim in the pool. Is it possible to expand the change rooms and maybe even put in some lockers for clothes? When mu granddaughter heard about the fire, she cried, then asked “What about the bunnies?”
72. Bev Gobien says:
We have spent many wonderful times at White Point over the years with no complaints about this beautiful Resort. However,we would often say it would be nice if there were two indoor pools. One for adults and a seperate one for children. Other than that I would not want to change a thing. Looking forward to your Grand Opening. We
will always have our memories of the Old Lodge and are now looking forward to making many new memories in the new Lodge.
73. Vicki Morton says:
It would be nice to have a larger bar area. Maybe a conference room could open up to the bar if more space was needed. It would be nice if you had poured cement around the pool area instead of tile. It is very slippery for children/people on crutches. Tile looks great but I have seen many a fall. At the very least mayve a wheelchair could be available to assist around the pool area. Everyone wants the view of the ocean so rooms etc should face
the ocean whenever possible. It was nice being able to walk out to the balcony from the bar area and have a drink. The fireplaces were great hope they keep them. Sprinkler system and elevator as well. Just some ideas.
74. Nancy Macdonald says:
Our hope for our favorite place, is that it remains a place we feel we’ve stepped back in time. Relaxed, comfortable and welcome. A big part of that feeling came from the not too new or perfect surroundings. Not a shiney and chic feeling, rather a sand between your toes and cosy blankets kind of feeling. Beach stone fireplaces a must, soft places to sit, and views of the sea. Bunnies, family, friends and good food—that about sums it up for us. Good luck for the rebuild, can hardly wait, it will be wonderful we’re sure.
75. Caitlin Nickerson says:
I know it’s been mentioned already, but I think an outdoor hot tub would be great. At many resorts in Banff, you’re able to sit outside in the hot tub & look at the mountains. I think it would be even better to be able to sit outsite in the hot tub and listen to the ocean! Can’t wait for the rebuild!
76. The Arsenaults say:
First of all, I would like to say I agree with what
another lady said…rebuild like the original, no changes needed! We
have been owners at White Point for years now, and the biggest reason
we bought is because we felt like we were at home, if you you want to
dress up for dinner you can, if you want to wear jeans, you can and
still feel comfortable, and to those people who want swimming lanes,
thats not what its all about, the pool is to go have fun with your
friends or your family, not to sit and watch someone doing laps. If
you go to modern, you will lose the feel that has been there for over
80 years. As for a bigger gym, go for a walk on the beach or one of
the trails, no need for a huge gym overlooking the ocean. I really
hope we don’t lose that down home feel, White Point is beautiful like
it is.
77. Beverley Burlock says:
I listened with interest to your reports of ideas that have come in regarding aspects desired for the new facilities after the terrible fire. Maybe I didn’t listen hard enough, or maybe you felt that was not the time for certain ideas, but I DO SO HOPE that the rebuilding will take into account all the ‘green’ possibilities that are currently available. I sent an email shortly after the fire suggesting what a great thing it would be if the building could become a showcase for green building possibilities – ones available right now as mentioned by local author Marq de Villiers in his latest book Our Way Out. I do hope these things are part of the plan – respectfully requested
78. Denise Gallupe says:
Please stick to the rustic ambience when rebuilding the lodge and if possible rebuild those wonderful beach stone fireplaces! I have so many wonderful memories sitting in front of them. A lodge made out of logs would be awesome! I can’t wait to book a vacation for when it is ready
79. Diane Mair says:
Lots of great ideas pouring in! I’ll add my 2cents worth:
1) I agree with having an elevator for access to all levels for the disabled
2) The rooms should have decks with plexi-glass for a clear view of the ocean.
3) WiFi to allow use of laptops in your room
4) The pool staff should be able to have a clear view of the pool from their ‘office’ rather than out the door and across the hall.
5) Change rooms directly connected to the pool area (I believe that one’s been mentioned a few times already)
6) An indoor wading pool for the little ones to play in, with maybe a fountain in the middle. Many toddlers don’t like getting in the big pool where they can’t stand up.
7) Foosball was a great addition to the games room. Maybe add an air hockey table as well?
A takeout where you can get an icecream is a must! (chips, chocolate bars, and other snacks too)
9) A Keurig coffee maker in the lobby with a selection of coffees to buy (and muffins, etc.) Great for those departing early, or those with early tee-off times.
Looking forward to seeing what the designers come up with!!
80. Guy J. Belliveau says:
Hi Mr.D. Morton,
Simply put, how can you and the construction crew, architects, furniture suppliers, and everyone involved in the reconstruction make something modern and new look and feel old and rustic. Any new construction that cannot come close to what was there previously will take away from the natural beauty and drawing power of the location.
Yes people have memories of the old lodge and clients will make new memories. But wouldn’t it be great if the memories and sentimental history could be almost seamless and continue on…apart from the downtime caused by the fire. I have been to White Point several time and know what a gorgeous sea shore gem you had as the lodge. My tack
with the new construction would be, as indicated, to try and rebuild as close a resemblance to the old lodge as possible. However, I’m sure that whatever is built will be great. I wish you all the best and know that the new lodge will be part of future client’s new memories and experiences. I’m sure we will make new memories at the new/old White Point Lodge again. Guy. PS Thanks for the Webcam, great idea!
81. Demitrious Apessos says:
- Bigger indoor heated pool (lap pool).
- Saunas
- Spacious exercise room with ocean views.
82. Jean Brown says:
I have always loved the expanse of the dining room and the view from it. I hope that you can capture this feeling in the new building. Perhaps a beautiful hardwood floor for the dining room A pool for us Country Club people please. When the conference center over the pool and the founders lounge were added the melding of the new and old was so well done. I trust that you will do that again.
83. John C. Bishop says:
My family has been travelling to White Point for almost 70 years; beginning with my parent’s honeymoon the tradition continues to this day with my own family. White Point has been a get-away and provides the best of what Nova Scotia has to offer. The only recommendation I have is that the new construction blend in
with the rest of the property not like the add on of the convention center some years ago.
Some of the ambiance of White Point has always been the rustic look of the place and I hope the architect will take that into consideration when deciding what the “new” look should be.
84. Shareen Woodford says:
Build a large open concept YOGA STUDIO, so your Inn can host yoga retreats
(I would likely come with groups and lead them! Or use the space for yoga teacher trainings)
85. Nance Ackerman says:
Please use ‘real’ building materials – no click flooring, no mdf! I started coming to White point at the age of 8 more than 40 years ago, and our family loved it so much we bought land and moved there! My childhood (and my childrens’) memories are wrapped up in that beautiful place. It is vital to rebuild the Lodge with respect for the heritage and history of the materials.
86 : Kile Miller says:
You Should use the same fire place.
87. Jarod says:
I think it should have a pool with a slide and a deep end to jump in!
88. Julia Corbett says:
For the events room (where weddings and other special events are held) I would love to see it be a large room with the exterior wall, facing the ocean, curved to offer a panoramic view of the ocean, with floor to ceiling windows that do not spoil the beautiful view, something similar to the 1st photo upload attached.
For the main entrance, tall ceilings should be a must. As you walk in, it would be nice to see a long granite check in counter. Behind the check in counter (appropriate distance away) there should be a
floor to ceiling stone double sided fireplace that is visible as you walk in, offering a warm and comfortable atmosphere, but also visible from the other side of the wall where a small lounge area should be located such as in the original lodge. (see photo upload 2 for
fireplace style only (ignore other the colour of the stone and design featured in the rest of the picture as i believe White Point should still be “rustic” and made mostly of wood.)
89. Kings County resident says:
Wheelchair Accessablity please……
90. Janice Duncanson says:
Keep it rustic …the ocean is the draw for me so lots of glass and a discreetelevator is a good idea.Since I stay in cottages (due to dogs) think that rooms in lodge need to be cozy and comfortable…maybe a few suites for families who want lodge dwelling verses cottage dwelling. Can’t wait to have lunch on patio, so tha is a must!
91. Lisa Cousins says:
Keep the old wooden look of the building.
92. Autumn Mc Donald says:
Make the pool deeper.
93. Roger Laycock says:
I stayed there in 2007 and would love to come back. I really hope your resort remains relaxed and affordable. Please don’t make it a fancy snooty place. More water front rooms would be nice?
94. Matthieu Comeau says:
The ineffable charm of a building that’s seen as many visitors as the Old lodge is impossible to reproduce, but it couldn’t hurt to try.
So many historic hotels, without the prompting of a fire, undergo modern and minimal renovations. While there is no problem with this style per se, truly historic hotels are an increasing rarity and will surely become more and more treasured.
You should look to other buildings from the era for inspiration. The Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, Oregon and the Chateau Montabello, Quebec are excellent examples. Although built on a grander scale, they exude the rustic elegance without pretension of the old turreted lodge.
Whatever you choose to build, I’m eager to see it’s completion,
Regards, Matthieu Comeau

95. Barb Moreton says:
Blend the old style with the new. A main dining room with large and open views of the water. Second informal room with a menu suited to casual and “pub” style food. Maintain the historical aspects of White Point lodge with a bar encompassing a larger area with fireplace. Integrate stone, wood and artifacts with updated building materials to give a unique , yet comfortable feeling of a lodge that has been updated. Consider types of heating and flooring that is energy efficient. Consider a theme that respects the past history and presents the best of what it was and can be. All the best and I look forward to the opening of White Point Main Lodge.
96. Luisa Burden says:
I would really like to see the outdoor pool expanded with a nice deck and somewhere to sit and enjoy the sun, sand, and maybe a few drinks from the bar.
97. Sophie says:
Hi there,
I am terribly sorry for the loss of White Point’s historic lodge. But I am glad that everyone is working hard to re-build our beloved landmark. What my family and friends and myself would love to see re-built, would be the wooden logs that made up most of the walls of your previous lodge. We feel that it made everything look very original and rustic. Not to mention giving out the bunny food, and just the overall wooden appearance of the lodge.
Best, Sophie
98. The Fergusons say:
I have been to White Point many times and feel that maybe the pool changing rooms should be closer to the pool. Also I think that the shower areas should have a lock door like the toilet stalls because i find the curtan doesn’t allow much privacy and maybe a shampoo and conditionner and soap dispenser should be put in the shower stall too so if somebody forgets, it is right there! I hope you consider these ideas in future remodeling. Good luck on remodeling the building!! Sincerely, Emily Fergusons
